With the release of the fifth installment of the series, Saw became the most lucrative horror franchise in history. With a domestic gross of $316 million, it is ahead of Friday the 13th ($315 million), A Nightmare on Elm Street ($307 million) and Halloween ($275 million).
Saw is a series of five films (so far), created by director James Wan and screenwriter Leigh Whannell, revolving around the character of the Jigsaw Killer, a dying(and then later dead) man who kidnaps a series of victims and places them in deadly, elaborate traps.
One Saw film is being released every year at the time of Halloween, and a sixth episode is expected for October 2009.
It's good to note that The Friday the 13th saga is going to reborn on January 2009 with a new film produced by Michael Bay.
