Why doesn't Johny Depp play Didier?

Who am I to judge but I think Johnny Depp would not be the right Lindsay - I imagine a young Russell Crowe -type in that role, much bigger and more australian looking - dull in a way...Johnny Depp would be the perfect Didier I think -though the role is not that big....but I cannot imagine him as Lindsay, although I love him as an actor....but I am curious to see what happens, maybe I am totally wrong...

I agree with u man.. Though im a gr8 fan of Depp, I really cant say anything about his role. May turn out to be better than what we re expecting. But sceptical about Russell acting out Lin. Though I must say the cast is excellent. I JUST CANT WAIT FOR THE MOVIE!!!!!! Who's taking Karla's role?

The right cast...

Australian actor Ryan Kwanten, who plays Jason Stackhouse in True Blood, would be a great fit for a young Lindsay.
He has the right build and he has the acting ability.
Still, if Johnny can get the accent down, he could do it but I think he's looking a bit too old.

Ryan Kwanten ?? No f**king way !!

Johnny Deep as Linbaba

I don't agree with you if i may. Didier is the typical frenchy, with a strong characteristic as we all know but i think it's a too calm role for him. I totally think that J can make the best Lin. I seriously don't have anyother name than his for this role. Among all the film he has done...he can totally incarnate Lin. Future hopefully will proves me right!

J Depp as Lin...?

i loved the book and can't wait for the film now...i was doing a bit of casting whilst i was reading it and JDepp definitely didn't make my list!...i think he's an amazing, talented actor but can't see him as Australian ex-prisoner...i'm thinking more Hugh Jackman...and for Carla's role Kate Blanchett...

Hugh Jackman...oh, Lord, i hate that Lin was tortured but if Hugh Jackman is the actor, please make thosle scenes long and tolerable so his shirt is off longer. Amen.

linbaba's role

I am on page 609 and LOVING this book! It reads like a movie in my mind and is so visually stunning I can't put it down. I can only think of Ralf Fiennes for Lin's role. He would be perfect and perhaps Rachel Weiss for Karla? He has the scope and acting chops to take on such an epic story. And his face and physique are perfect for the role. I don't see Johnny Depp at all.

For Didier i would have

For the role of didier i picture benico deltoro being the perfect fit from reading the book.

has anybody pictured Vincent Cassell in this role? absolutely fantastic in mesrine and loads of others. French national but will lend to any accent. has the stature, looks everything. What do you think?

response to actors of shantaram

you are not wrong you are totally right i think. depp would be perfect for didier and he could draw on his jack sparrow potrayal to capture the whisky glass swooshing, body rocking swagger of didier. he could definetly capture the arogant charm of didier.

he is not right for the lin role i think it requires a more natrually gritty actor. crowe could still pull it of i think. or maybe paddy considine from dead mans shoes, he would be geat if he beefed up a bit. daniel craig?- has the dullness. still a good actor.

this is in my opinion one of the best storys out there and if made right could be a contender for the best film ever made i cant wait to see it made. hopefully they dont make it soon and get me to direct it when i finish my degree haha....what would be the ideal opening scene??

Depp is great but just not right for this role

I too am a big Depp fan BUT he is just not right for the lead role in this film.Too pretty. It needs a more raw yet still sensitive type of person. Daniel Craig has the look and the tough edge to play Lindsay although I'm not sure whether he has the depth and sensitivity.Anyhow it is such a great story I hope that Johnny can see past his own ego to realise that he "aint got the grit" to do this one.

Craig not Depp

Yeah, I agree. Although I love Depp as an actor and think he has tremendous screen charisma he's just not Lindsay. Having just read the book, its so physical and violent that it needs more muslce with a sensitive side, that just has to be Daniel Craig. He is both a great character actor and can muscle up for a violent role. Depp is too pretty! Depp would be a good Didier, but maybe too young? Cannot wait for the film! Hope it's true to the book though.

I'm for Daniel Craig as Linbaba, I think he could be a perfect pick for that. He even look as Gregory Robers.

totally agree Johnny would be better as didier, although I think Mark Strong would be good actor as well...maybe Johnny could play mauricio....I cant wait for this film, I sooo want to go to mumbai now!!! Maybe I could get the part of lisa carter, ha, ha x

Roel of Linbaba/Shantaram

When I read the book, before the movie was announces, I always imagined Daniel Craig as Lin. But Russel Crowe would be good too.

I'm curious as to who would play Karla. A young Monica Belluci? Maria Grazia Cuccinota?

Either way this was a great book, totally stunning...even though I doubt it's absolutely factual. Gregory Roberts called it a true story in one of his interviews, check youtube.

I think jennifer connelly should Play Karla

A young Glenn Shaddix or Robbie Coltrane should play Didier

As for Lin - whoever ends up playing him has to meet some very big expectations.

mmm, Jennifer Connelly as Karla- I can see that. I am in the thick of the book right now and having a difficult time seeing Depp as Linbaba as well, then again maybe he doesn't intend to take the role of Lin?

Posted by G2879 - Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

When I read the book, i totally pictured Jennifer Connely as Karla. They way he described Karla was the image of her..

I think that it is a major pity that Heath Ledger passed on. He would have been an excellent choice. I agree that I can't really see Jonny Depp in the role.. as much as I love his acting.

For me, Russel Crowe just won't cut it either but will say that i think that Eric Banna might not be a bad consideration.

Guy Pierice in my opinion is the best to play Shantaram. If you look at his body of work he is the only Australian who could pull it off. johnny d is to old and the accent would not work. Russell all though a great actor is simply too old to play the part. This is a truly great great story that must be told

Posted by G1462 - Saturday, January 30th, 2010

he owns the rights so lets see what happens. Although a great actor and i have grown to love him in a lot of his films. i dont think him to be able to have the physical character to pull the role off. time will tell

Posted by G1463 - Saturday, January 30th, 2010

We shall wait and see what johny d does with the Australian accent. in my opinion Guy Pearce would of nailed it

The role of Linbaba

Johnny Depp is an excellent actor and can probably pull it off. However, the outstanding actor, Sean Penn, would be a better choice in my opinion.

No type-casting

Mr Depp does not look like the Lin as I imagen him from the book but, as I do think that Depp is far the best actor alive, I´m really looking forward to see him take on this challange and see what he can do with it Bjorn

Depp is right for it.

Depp will own the role, he is slight enough to pull off the prison and Afghan scenes, only hope he doesn't make himself unwell in the process. Didier is pudgy in my mind. Any actors who feel like letting themselves go for a while? LOL

It won't hurt him to gain a little weight since he's not healthy

I mean, Depp smokes a ton, and drinks. He's not healthy to begin with, and maybe a few pounds won't hurt him.

Depp as Linbaba

I agree. Depp is a great actor, but hopefully he realizes that this is not the right fit for him. He does not have the right look, he needs to be more physically intimidating, and a little scary looking. I would like to see a relatively unknown actor take the role of Linbaba. An unfamiliar face makes it seem more genuine and realistic to me.

Bradley Cooper would be great

Has anyone seen Limitless. Bradley Cooper in the first half of the movie looks a lot like Greg. Could be great.

There is only one actor who can star as Linbaba and blow us away: Rhys Ifans.
