«Deep Blue Sea» (also known as "Blu profondo") is an Action/Horror/Thriller film directed by Renny Harlin, and written by Duncan Kennedy, Donna Powers, and Wayne Powers, released in the USA on July 26 of 1999 , starring Thomas Jane, Saffron Burrows, LL Cool J, Michael Rapaport, Stellan Skarsgård and Samuel L. Jackson.

Storyline:
On a remote top-secret island facility called Aquatica, a team of scientists are searching for a cure for Alzheimer's disease. One of them, Dr. Susan McAlester (Saffron Burrows), violates the code of ethics, and genetically engineers three Mako sharks, intending to increase their brain capacity so that they can harvest the tissue as a cure for Alzheimer's. Unfortunately, the increased brain capacity also makes the sharks smarter, faster, and more dangerous. Aquatica's financial backers are skeptical and nervous about the tests, and send a corporate executive (Samuel L. Jackson) to visit the facility.

In order to prove that the research is worth it, the team manage to remove brain tissue from the largest shark the adult female. However, an accident sets off a chain of events that allows the sharks to engineer an escape, and flood the internal structure, allowing them entry to target the humans within it. I think this movie suffered because everybody just immediately thought JAWS RIP-OFF and the studio, WB did zippo to show wrong with virtully no advertisement. Still this (NOTHING AT ALL LIKE JAWS) action/horror flick pulled in arouund 72k I think. It was great, given it's genre. Nothing went as anyone expected. A the audience would start to groan at "Oh heard it heard it" BAM a BIG SURPIRSE. Axtin was superb and I'm a huge Renny Harline fan. Nobody could have gotten this on film this well byt him, IMHO. See it on cable every other which says a lot. Laugh, cringe, scream but keep your eyes on the screen -- it ain't gonna he what you expect or have ever seem before!!
