Before making The Abyss, James Cameron had directed Aliens, released in 1986, The Terminator (1984), Piranha Part Two: The Spawning (1981), Xenogenesis (1978). Since, he directed Terminator 2: Judgment Day, released in 1991, True Lies (1994), Titanic (1997), Avatar (2009), Avatar 2 (2018).

James Cameron is also currently attached to the upcoming movie Avatar 3, scheduled to be released in 2020.
