Before making Brubaker, he had directed Stay Hungry, released in 1976, The King of Marvin Gardens (1972), Five Easy Pieces (1970), Head (1968). Stuart Rosenberg was an American director, and producer. Since, Stuart Rosenberg directed The Pope of Greenwich Village, released in 1984, My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys (1991).

During a dramatic standoff, he reveals himself to be the new prison warden, Henry Brubaker, to the amazement of both prisoners and officials alike.
