Vincente Minnelli was an American director. Before making The Story of Three Loves, he had directed The Bad and the Beautiful, released in 1952, An American in Paris (1951), Father's Little Dividend (1951), Father of the Bride (1950), Madame Bovary (1949), and The Pirate (1948). Since, Vincente Minnelli directed The Band Wagon, released in 1953, The Long, Long Trailer (1954), Brigadoon (1954), The Cobweb (1955), Kismet (1955), and Lust for Life (1956).

Gottfried Reinhardt was a German producer, director, and writer. Before directing The Story of Three Loves, he had directed Invitation, released in 1952. Since, Gottfried Reinhardt directed Betrayed, released in 1954, Menschen im Hotel (1959), Town Without Pity (1961).

On an ocean liner, a passenger recognizes famed ballet creator Charles Coudray (James Mason), and asks him politely why one of his works has never been performed since its debut. When Coudray remains silent, the fan leaves him alone with his thoughts, leading to a flashback.
