Depending on the way you look at it, the ending is not strange or random at all. If you choose to look at it in the light you already are, then it looks that way. But if you choose to look at it from the spiritual view, it isn't one bit strange. The 'whispering people' have been sent to protect the children throughout the movie, and at one point show Caleb a glimpse of the future. At the end, the whispering people leave their bodies and return to their angelic form. Caleb tells his father "They sent a message ahead of them to prepare the way and now they're coming for us." The children were chosen to help start over. "Only the chosen must go, those who have heard the call." The children are taken, like Adam and Eve, and placed on another earth with two bunnies. Other ships like the ones that the children came off of, can be seen in the atmosphere. It is my assumption that they have dropped off two more children, one male and one female, as well as another type of animal, one male and one female.
