Family and friends called her Mary or Mairoula...

Maria Maniati was born Dec 20, 1929 in Nafplion to a rather wealthy young lady and an aspiring attorney. Sadly, the family was torn apart the following year when her mother and her newborn brother died from a blood infection. Mary was raised by her father and her aunt. She became a brilliant student who loved poetry and the law but her dreams were interrupted by war. German soldiers kidnapped her and her aunt in 1944 and shipped them to Erfurt. They imprisoned them in a labor camp where they forced them to make aircraft parts under horrible conditions. Luckily, a year later, the US forces liberated the camp and sent the two women back home. Mary suffered from malnutrition and went through a long recovering process. She moved to Athens at age 17 to study theater and she also attended law school for four years. Then, love and marriage happened and Mary quit her career to raise a family. She was a wonderful mom, a great cook, and a teacher. Her husband didn't appreciate her devotion and sacrifice however. He cheated on her for years and he visited the children less and less as they grew older.

On Sept 11 1991, her journey came to an end after three days in a coma caused by a massive stroke. Her last words before she could no longer speak were: "I want to dance!" Her wit and unconditional love will always be missed. Rest in Peace mama...
